Get Set for understanding at work: How Mallory gained confidence, adjustments and a fairer workplace.
When Mallory reached out to the Get Set for Work programme, delivered by Get Set UK on behalf of Essex County Council, she was navigating a difficult situation. A neurodivergent employee with autism, a misunderstanding of her neurodiversity had led to disciplinary action at work.
Mallory worked with her Get Set for Work Employee Consultant, Mia F., to prepare for her disciplinary meeting, where Mia supported her to explain how autism affects her day-to-day role and attended the meeting as her representative. This gave Mia the confidence to speak up and ensure her voice was heard. When the outcome still didn’t feel fair, Mia supported Mallory through the appeals process, and as a result, the disciplinary action was reduced, acknowledging that her disability hadn’t been properly considered.
From there, Mia worked with Mallory and her employer to prevent future misunderstandings and to request and agree on a range of reasonable workplace adjustments, including:
✅ Flexible working to better manage energy levels
✅ Monthly one-to-one meetings for ongoing check-ins
✅ Noise-cancelling headphones to reduce sensory overload
✅ Short breaks when feeling overwhelmed
These adjustments are now formally reviewed each month by her employer and HR team, ensuring Mallory continues to receive the support she needs.
Mallory is now feeling more at ease in the workplace and managing her workload more effectively. Her employer also feels better equipped to support other neurodiverse colleagues in future, showing the ripple effect of what true opportunity looks like.
