Chase came to Get Set UK facing several barriers to employment. As a transgender individual with dual sensory impairments, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), mild cognitive processing challenges, and macular disease, Chase faced numerous obstacles. Previous employment attempts faltered due to a lack of understanding and reasonable adjustments. Despite these setbacks, Chase remained motivated, armed with a BTEC Level 2 in Health and Social Care and a clear aspiration to work in an inclusive, supportive environment.
Chase joined our Work Wise programme where Mel Overton, Get Set UK IPS Employment Specialist, identified his unique challenges and aspirations and together, they:
> Explored reasonable adjustments needed for employment success.
> Discussed disclosure strategies to approach employers effectively.
> Prepared for interviews by emphasizing sector-specific knowledge, such as safeguarding and confidentiality
> Identified opportunities aligned with Chase’s strengths and interests.
This personalised guidance empowered Chase to advocate for his needs while navigating the complexities of job applications and interviews. Mel’s support and Chase’s determination led to an interview at Pear Tree Nursery for the role of Baby Room Leader. While the employer felt Chase was not ready for a leadership position, they recognised his potential and offered him a position as a Nursery Team Member. This role, which begins in January, includes on-the-job training and a pathway to further development.
Mel is now working with Pear Tree Nursery to ensure Chase’s success. This includes facilitating discussions about reasonable adjustments, offering training to the employer, and establishing a supportive framework for Chase’s continued growth.
