Get Set for Work helps Simon discover his purpose through new skills.
After overcoming significant health challenges after a brain haemorrhage 14 years ago, Simon Connell was ready to take on a new challenge and find his purpose. Simon joined Get Set for Work, a programme delivered by Get Set UK for Essex County Council, providing personalised guidance to help adults with disabilities and/or neurodiverse needs overcome challenges and secure fulfilling employment.
Simon was matched with Get Set for Work Consultant Holly Bailey, who provided one-to-one guidance and helped him build confidence, identify his goals, and explore new pathways. As part of the programme’s person-centred approach, Holly introduced Simon to the First Site Spectrum Plus event in Colchester, a disability-friendly employment and support fair that brought together inclusive employers, training providers and community support services.
At the event, Simon engaged enthusiastically with stallholders, sharing his story and exploring potential opportunities. One stall in particular caught his eye: free woodworking training. Recognising its potential to offer both purpose and a practical skill, Holly supported Simon to stay focused on his goals and set a SMART action plan to follow up.
Within a week, Simon had taken the initiative to contact the provider and arrange a trial session. This marked a pivotal step toward building his confidence and gaining a new skill that could open the door to future employment.
“Simon has always demonstrated great enthusiasm and a strong desire to find a skill he can learn and potentially turn into a rewarding career,” said Holly. “His determination to overcome the challenges posed by his health barriers is truly inspiring.”
We can’t wait to see where this next step takes him!
