REP | 24 January
Raihana, aged 34, and Anna, aged 30, both joined the REP scheme recently, as their lack of English language knowledge created a number of challenges to gaining successful employment.
Raihana, originally from Afghanistan, had been struggling to integrate and feel part of her local community, especially during the school run where she felt isolated from the other parents. Her REP Case Manager, Abid Usmaan, suggested that she enrol on our ESOL courses. Raihana was shy and reserved, her ESOL Tutor, Ewa Haladus encouraged her to become more involved with other course members and to take the lead in conversation. Raihana’s confidence started to grow, and she was soon able to hold a conversation and reach out to her peers and Ewa, her Tutor for support. Upon completion of the course, Raihana felt her confidence improve and began engaging with other parents on the school run for the first time since coming to the UK.
Anna (name changed for anonymity) originally from Central America, embarked on a remarkable journey when she fled to the UK seeking asylum in 2023. Anna was facing challenges, from language barriers to creating an effective CV, applying for jobs and preparing for job interviews. She was also struggling financially with essentials like suitable work clothing and waterproofs for cycling. Get Set’s REP Case Manager, Lyz Stepanishyna, supported Anna with CV guidance and enrolment in a work-related ESOL course, to break down the language barriers she was facing. Anna completed the ESOL course and secured a cleaning job in a local hospital. Get Set UK recognised the importance of a smooth commute to work for Anna and equipped her with bike lights and a voucher for suitable clothing.
