At HMP Thameside, In Custody IAG Advisor, Julie has been quietly transforming lives. Working with two recently sentenced prisoners who had lost motivation and struggled to engage, Julie focused on what she saw – potential.
Through empathy, encouragement and one-to-one guidance, she helped them view their time in custody as a chance for personal growth, not a limitation. Her support inspired both individuals to become Peer Mentors, helping others to plan their own futures and find purpose through the prisonโs Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) service.
Her impact didnโt stop there. The positivity and trust Julie built has spread across the prison community, encouraging more prisoners to engage with the service and take ownership of their next steps.
One participant was so moved by the support he received that he wrote a poem about his experience with the programme. His words capture what so many feel but rarely express: hope, reflection, and the belief that change is possible. Read his poem below.
This is what Get Set for Career Support is all about, giving people the tools, guidance and confidence to rebuild their futures, one step at a time. Find out more about this service here
