Darren Silcock came to the Get Set for Work programme with ongoing medical issues, including a bad back, and SEND needs. Not yet ready for employment due to his physical health, Darren wanted to explore the opportunity of a voluntary role.
Working with Steven Brand, his Get Set for Work Consultant, together they identified where Darren needed support, from managing anxiety and building interview confidence, to understanding what courses and volunteering roles could open the right doors. After losing his beloved dog a year ago, Darren decided that he wanted to work with animals, especially dogs.
To help Darren build his confidence in applying for volunteer role, Steven supported him to:
✅ Create a standout CV tailored to roles in animal care
✅ Prepare for interviews with techniques and body language tips to boost his confidence
✅ Create targeted cover letters to the right opportunities
✅ Identify training pathways and volunteering roles in dog care and behaviour
Darren commented:
“Steven has really helped me by being supportive and encouraging me to find the kind of work I want to do. He helped improve my CV by making sure that it is laid out in a style where it will get noticed more and ensured it included keywords that employers might be looking for and helped me write targeted cover letters.
He has also helped with interview techniques and improving my body language to appear more confident. Steven has also been looking for courses and volunteer work that will help me to find a job in the future.”
While Darren isn’t quite ready for work just yet due to his health, he is much closer than before. He now has the tools, the knowledge, and most importantly, the confidence to pursue the kind of career that truly matters to him.
