A success story

Katie’s success story.

Read Katie’s story to learn how the Brixton Creative Works programme is preparing her to become a make-up artist in the future.

What was Katie’s situation?

The participant was referred to our Brixton Creative Works programme by her JobCentre Plus advisor. She is a young person interested in a career as a make-up artist for stage productions. Katie has a secondary mental health condition and relies on her mum to accompany her to appointments. She hoped that by joining the programme she would be supported in finding out more about becoming a make-up artist and building her confidence so that she could become more independent.

Initially, Katie brought her mum to her appointments with our advisor, Ife. They discussed what courses Katie could do, and she realised she’d need help, so online courses were probably not the best option. Our advisor Ife found a Production Open Day at Mountview and arranged to attend the Saturday session with Katie and her mum. It was a great session that Katie enjoyed, but when she went home and discussed it with her mum, she came to the conclusion that it would be hard for her to complete a course in mainstream education. Katie discussed this with our advisor, and they found an equivalent course at Oaklands College in Camberwell, which supports students with special needs.

How did Get Set UK help?

Katie has recently submitted an application to Oaklands College for the programme she is interested in. She is now confident enough to attend meetings with Ife without her mum and is also considering part-time work at Mc Donald’s. Her mother is very grateful for the support our BCW team has provided to Katie. She is pleased to see her becoming more independent and her confidence growing.

Katie and her mother are grateful for the assistance provided by our Brixton Creative Works team. Katie is extremely happy, and she is currently completing her Maths and English on a Traineeship with Get Set Set UK.
