A success story

Helen’s success story.

Learn how Helen, a pottery artist based in Lambeth, benefited from the Brixton Creative Work programme.

What was Helen’s situation?

We first met Helen Harrigan at the Black Culture market event  This market event is known to be attended by local artists and small business owners. Helen Harrigan runs her own home-based business, Loblolly Ceramic. Our advisor interacted with Helen, and was able to find out more about her amazing creations and how she started her business. Helen has been a pottery artist for over 12 years, it started as a hobby, and now she is a self-employed pottery artist.

She is Lambeth-based and sells her products online. Her range of products is amazing and she designs and creates all of her items. We informed Helen about Brixton Creative Works and the blended package we offer in order to support the creative sector in Lambeth.

How did Get Set UK help?

Helen was very interested in our proposal, so we scheduled a Zoom meeting after one week so that our colleague Alex could learn more about her creative line of work and what she was looking for in the future. Alex was able to identify that Helen was eligible and, although she had been in the sector for many years, she was facing challenges around growth and marketing. Our team recognised that Helen would greatly benefit from this programme with our assistance and business consulting sessions. Helen was overjoyed to learn about this, as well as how the programme will support her development in a highly personalised way. We had in-depth conversations regarding short-term and long-term objectives, and most importantly how she could improve. The next day, Helen came into our office to sign up and begin her journey with us.

Helen started the non-accredited business training delivered by James West. This has helped Helen identify key elements within her business. The current sales plan is not generating sufficient margin on product sales. She has some ambitious long-term plans, such as having her own workshop. The focus of this training is to address immediate sales, look at areas of additional revenue (i.e. delivering workshops / education classes) and start to build some of the foundations for future ambitions. Helen is a quick learner with a strong determination. She is also a very positive person, and we are delighted to be working with her.

“Being on this programme for the last 2 months has helped me enormously with my business. With the support I have received from James West and Alex I have identified the areas I needed to improve in order to streamline my working practice, accelerate my marketing and improve my time management skills. I look forward to working with you again next year.”
