Joe’s Journey to Employment: Building Confidence and Creating Opportunities.

Get Set for Work | 15 April 2025

Overcoming barriers to employment.

When Joe Pearson, 22, joined the Get Set for Work programme, he had no previous work experience, no CV, and had never attended a job interview. Living in shared accommodation with another participant we supported, Joe was introduced to us by a support worker who recognised he needed help to improve his motivation and confidence.

Joe’s main challenge was getting out of the house and engaging in more social, structured activities. Although passionate about gaming, he recognised the need to balance his interests with real-world experience to support his future career goals.

Personalised support to build skills and confidence.

Through tailored one-to-one sessions, Mia Furner, Get Set for Work Employee Consultant, worked closely with Joe to develop his employability skills and prepare him for the world of work. Together, they:

✅ Built Joe’s first CV, highlighting his strengths, interests, and potential.

✅ Identified and applied for voluntary opportunities to help him gain practical experience.

✅ Developed his confidence and communication skills by guiding him through the application process.

✅ Began career mapping activities to explore realistic pathways into the gaming industry.

Joe fully embraced the support offered by Mia, recognising the value of gaining experience before pursuing his dream role. His enthusiasm and openness to new opportunities reflected a genuine commitment to changing his future for the better

A new start at the British Heart Foundation.

Within just a few weeks, Joe successfully secured a voluntary role at the British Heart Foundation, where he is now thriving. He quickly settled in, completed his online training with minimal support, and has enjoyed meeting new people through his work. His new role not only gives him valuable experience but has also boosted his self-esteem and motivation.

Joe is continuing to work with Mia, where they will be career mapping, holding interview prep and  job searching sessions, and building an understanding of reasonable adjustments to ensure he is fully prepared for the next steps in his career journey.

“Joe has been such a pleasure to work with, he has the best sense of humour. He has shown so much enthusiasm and been extremely proactive in deciding that he wants his life to change for the better. I am confident that Joe will make a great volunteer and go on to do great things in his future.”

Mia Furner, Get Set for Work Employee Consultant

“I am really enjoying my sessions to get closer to employment. I am enjoying meeting new people at my volunteer role and hoping it will give me skills for future employment which I know will be useful for when I am ready.”
