A success story

Harvey’s success story.

Harvey recently began an apprenticeship with Get Set UK as part of the Restart Scheme and is grateful for this chance

What was Harvey’s situation?

Harvey is a young man from South Croydon who started an apprenticeship with Get Set UK in October of last year. He previously worked part-time in retail, but because he studied business studies as one of his GCSEs, he wanted to work in a more business/admin environment and was aware that retail/customer service was not something he wanted to progress in.

When Harvey first joined the programme and had his first meeting, our team identified a few barriers.

One of the most significant obstacles was that he had never worked in an administrative position before. He didn’t feel comfortable talking on the phone at first, and he wasn’t used to using different software.

Another barrier was Harvey’s commute to work, as he lives in Croydon and has a two-hour commute, which was sometimes impacted by train strikes and made travel difficult.

Because of the distance, Get Set UK was able to provide Harvey with flexibility, and we offered him to work from home whenever possible. This enabled him to save money while also gaining experience in remote working.

We gave Harvey the opportunity to gain valuable experience by increasing his responsibilities, and he received one-on-one training and practice roleplays, which helped him gain confidence when answering phone calls and speaking with participants who came into the office.

How did Get Set UK help?

Harvey has now been with Get Set UK for three months. He has done well and been very consistent in his day-to-day tasks, and he has taken on even more responsibilities. Every day, he finds it easier to manage his workload and continues to take on new tasks, such as creating future diary trackers for the EAs.

In the last three months, Harvey’s customer service and phone etiquette have significantly improved. He went from being nervous and timid when answering phone calls to now dealing with various complex situations in a relaxed and calm manner.

Harvey’s next goal after finishing his apprenticeship is to advance in the business. He recently completed EA training and is considering a career as an EA in this industry.

He continues to develop his skill set and improves on a daily basis, and he is aware of the support available to him from the entire Get Set UK team in Crawley.

“I have been at Get Set UK for 3 months now, and it has been a pleasant experience. As this is my first full time job, they have made me feel welcome and really pushed my development within the business and as an individual. For me, it is an amazing place to work, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far. The staff in Crawley are amazing and have really pushed me to become successful within the business.

We help a wide range of people at Get Set UK, and it makes me proud to know that I have helped someone get their life back on track and had a positive impact on them and potentially their family and friends.

I have spent most of my time with Matteo (Senior Employment Advisor), and he has shown me the key fundamentals of how the business runs. Matteo has been a massive help to me in settling in and making me feel welcome here. He has taught me how office systems work as well as how to conduct myself in an office environment. Matteo is always there to help and provide support when needed, which really made me feel comfortable within my first three months.

Overall, Get Set UK is a positive place to work, and it is very rewarding knowing that you can help change people’s lives for the better.”
