Tendring District Council joined the Get Set for Work programme, delivered by Get Set UK on behalf of Essex County Council, with a clear goal, to take their commitment to inclusivity even further by reapplying to become a Disability Confident Leader.
Since first achieving Tier 3 status in 2018, the council has embedded inclusion into every part of its culture, from recruitment and training to policies and everyday practice. Their reapplication gave them the chance to reflect on progress, strengthen employee training around neurodiversity and adjustments, and gather evidence of the positive impact these changes have made.
Amy McManus, Get Set UK Employer Consultant, supported the council with:
✅ Reviewing inclusive recruitment practices to ensure continued accessibility in job adverts, applications, and interviews.
✅ Updating internal training for managers and HR professionals on neurodiversity, reasonable adjustments, and inclusive language.
✅ Refreshing internal policies to reflect current guidance and best practice.
✅ Capturing feedback and success stories from staff and job applicants to demonstrate lived experience and impact.
✅ Reinforcing senior-level buy-in, ensuring leadership remains aligned with the goals of the Disability Confident Scheme.
Tendring District Council’s reapplication for Tier 3 was successful, reaffirming its status as a Disability Confident Leader. The outcomes were clear, more disabled individuals are applying for roles, managers feel more confident in supporting colleagues, and team members across the council are engaged in conversations about inclusion. Beyond the workplace, their leadership has inspired other local authorities and employers across Essex to follow their example.
