When Taya Holbrook, 17, joined the Work Wise programme, delivered by Get Set UK on behalf of our partner, Surrey County Council, she was full of potential, but like many young people facing personal challenges, her confidence had been shaken. Having tragically lost both of her parents, Taya was living with her sister and partner and carried a growing sense of guilt for relying on their support.
Despite holding childcare qualifications and a clear passion for the sector, she felt unsure about how to move forward and doubted whether she was “good enough” to pursue her dream.
Taya shared with her Get Set UK IPS Employment Specialist that she aspired to work in childcare, but anxiety and self-doubt made her hesitant. Unsure which roles to pursue, she lacked the confidence to take the first step.
Structured, one-to-one support.
Through structured, one-to-one support, alongside her Employment Specialist, they focused on helping Taya see her strengths and build the confidence she needed to pursue her career goals, where they:
✅ Met weekly at Egham Library to create a safe space to explore her ambitions.
✅ Developed a personalised Action Plan to give structure and direction to her job search.
✅ Identified apprenticeship roles that matched her qualifications and long-term goals.
✅ Prepared for interviews with practice sessions and tailored coaching.
Taya was especially anxious about applying for apprenticeships, fearing they might be “above her abilities”. But with encouragement, preparation, and belief in her potential, she pushed past those doubts.
A breakthrough moment.
Taya applied for an apprenticeship with Toad Hall Nursery in Ottershaw, and not only was she offered an interview, but she impressed them with her preparation, professionalism, and passion. She confidently answered their questions and even prepared thoughtful questions of her own.
She’s now been offered the apprenticeship role and is completing final DBS checks before she starts. It’s a huge step forward, and one she’s worked incredibly hard for.
Taya’s journey shows that opportunity isn’t just about qualifications, it’s about being listened to, supported, and encouraged. With the right backing, she gained the confidence to follow her dream career.
Working alongside Surrey County Council, Work Wise focuses on support services for individuals looking for long-term paid employment, employees who need support to continue in their current role and employers who are looking to become more inclusive.
