A success story

Amir’s success story.

Amir is a Sudanese refugee in need of assistance. We are supporting him in beginning a new chapter in his life through the Work and Health Programme.

What was Amir’s situation?

Amir arrived in the UK as a refugee five years ago. He has been unemployed since leaving Sudan in 2017. His Jobcentre Plus referred him to the Work and Health Programme because he required additional support and guidance.

The participant met with his Employment Advisor Anindita in our Walthamstow office and together identified some areas where Amir needed more support, such as CV review, job search support, and interview techniques. He explained that he was nervous but open to any type of work and hoped to find a new job soon.

How did Get Set UK help?

Amir requested additional assistance from our expert in areas unrelated to employment because he had no one to help him, and Anindita was happy to help.

When the participant arrived in the UK, his social worker registered him for organ donation. When he received a letter from the NHS about it, he panicked and sought assistance in unregistering from the system. Anindita assisted him on the NHS website, and he later received a letter confirming that he was unregistered. This communication reassured the participant. Our Employment Advisor was also helping Amir with the Council Tax discount and how to apply for Council Housing.

Amir was invited to an interview for a housekeeping position at Travelodge thanks to Mohammed, one of our Employment Relationship Managers. The employer liked the candidate, but when they checked Amir’s right to work, they discovered that his passport and biometric had recently expired and asked for a share code. We then contacted Amir’s  lawyer, who informed us that because he was on refugee status, he did not have a share code, and the Home Office confirmed in a letter that he had no restrictions on his right to work. Our colleague Mohammed submitted all of the information to Travelodge Hotel, and the selection process will be completed very soon.

“I am very thankful and happy with Anindita’s service. Anindita went above and beyond to support me. I am very happy to have her as my Employment Advisor.”
