How did Get Set UK help?

The customer has been unemployed for more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was referred to the Restart Scheme earlier this year. He had done a variety of jobs, but when he first came to us, he stated that he wanted to be a Document Controller because that is what he had enjoyed doing; however, he only had 12 months of experience in this role on his CV. At the start of their one-to-one session, he told our tutor Mark that his confidence level in finding work as a Document Controller was at a level of 5 out of 10. Mark decided to focus his sessions with the participant on teaching him how to access the hidden job market and tailor his CV and covering letter to specific employers, rather than sending out a generic CV for all of the jobs he was applying for.

The customer also learned how to use the speculative letter approach with small businesses (The Hidden Job Market) to try to create a vacancy for himself before the vacancy was advertised online (The Open Job Market). During the one-on-one session, he was also encouraged to apply for jobs even if he didn’t have all of the skills, personal qualities, experience, and knowledge listed in the job description, because there may be no applicants who have everything that is required. He was also encouraged to contact HR departments within organisations if he had any questions about the role before applying for it. The participant left the session with a clear plan for increasing his chances of getting an interview, and we are confident that he will find a new job opportunity very soon.
