Mustafa is a 22-year-old Afghan refugee who joined the Restart Scheme in December 2022. He is an ambitious young man who desires to work hard in order to find new opportunities and a better life. His dream was to find work in the UK, but he had many concerns about it, and he realised that, like many refugees, he faced some obstacles, such as the fact that English was not his first language.
Despite this, Mustafa did not give up, and when he first joined the programme, he stated he was willing to do anything to sustain himself.
Mustafa met with Reena, his Employment Advisor, in our Crawley office and told her that he knew there were many ways to start a good career but wasn’t sure whether he should join an apprenticeship or apply for jobs. Our colleague tried to better understand the participant’s aspirations and transferable skills and also assisted him in reviewing apprenticeship opportunities online, although some of them were not ideal for him because he was unable to travel far from Crawley.
After a few weeks, Mustafa and Reena went to a job fair at JobCentre Plus in Forest Gate, where they discovered some employment options in Gatwich that matched Mustafa’s interests and objectives.
As the participant gained confidence, Reena invited him to apply for some open positions and prepared him for the interviews.
Mustafa had two interviews, one on-site and one online, with a company based at Gatwick Airport. He was successful and was hired as a Promotions Consultant. He had to pay for his Afghanistan and UK DBS, as well as other relevant expenses related to his work contract, but his Employment Advisor Renna provided financial assistance through the Restart Scheme. He was able to begin work without difficulty.
The participant is overjoyed and confident that, despite being a refugee, he has found work in the UK and is extremely proud of his accomplishment. He is grateful to have joined the Restart programme and received the assistance he needed to find work.
Mustafa wishes to advance in his career and earn more money. He is aware of the programme’s In Work support and calls his advisor on a regular basis to update her on his work schedules and to request assistance when needed.
“I’d like to thank Reena, my Employment Advisor, for all of her help and advice. Get Set Uk and the Restart Scheme have made me very happy and satisfied.”
