Get Set for Work programme breaks down employment barriers for Caitlin
Get Set for Work | 23 April 2024
Caitlin Smith, aged 19, felt that her learning disability and memory loss were barriers to finding employment. She contacted Laura from our Get Set for Work programme looking for support to overcome these barriers, as well as challenges she faced related to interviews, CV prep, adapting to work environments, and building her confidence and independence.
Laura Clarke, Get Set UK Family Support Consultant, addressed Caitlin’s barriers and created a 12-week intervention plan that involved confidence-boosting sessions, CV prep, and finding Caitlin a voluntary position at a local art centre. This allowed Caitlin to commute independently, instantly boosting her confidence due to it being a familiar location.
Through consistent engagement and a diverse range of activities, Laura successfully dismantled the barriers Caitilin was facing and allowed her to discover and value her strengths and capabilities. Laura also recognised the importance of family support and involved Caitlin’s mum in discussions about work misconceptions and development growth.
Laura Clarke, Family Support Consultant, commented: “I am very proud of how far Caitlin has come; her confidence has grown which shines through during our visits. Caitlin is a kind and caring individual who I believe will go far in life, she will also be a credit to her future employers.”
“Since joining the programme, Caitlin has greatly benefited from the weekly meetings we have with Laura. Caitlin feels very at ease and has felt comfortable talking freely to Laura about her strengths and her weaknesses. Caitlin’s understanding is not very good, and she can be easily confused, Laura is helping her to understand situations, often giving examples to help Caitlin to understand better. I feel Get Set for Work is a very worthwhile programme for anyone with an additional need to get involved in.”
