Neil’s success story.

After being out of work since mid-2024, Neil Elms, turned to Get Set UK for guidance and support. He was really struggling with confidence, self-belief, and knowing where to begin with his job search. He needed structured support, someone to help him refocus, rebuild his confidence, and guide him back into work.

Through the National Careers Service that Get Set UK deliver on behalf of our partner Shaw Trust in Crawley, Neil was introduced to Reena Bappoo, Senior Careers Advisor who worked with him to rebuild his confidence and plan his next steps. Together, they reviewed and strengthened his CV, explored suitable job opportunities, and identified training that would support his goals.

Reena also helped Neil enrol on relevant online courses through Alison Empower Yourself, including training on managing antisocial behaviour, a key skill for the type of work Neil wanted to pursue. “What stood out to me was how personalised the support was,” Neil said. “We talked about my goals, my experience, and where I wanted to go in my career. I felt truly listened to, and my adviser gave me the tools and motivation I needed to keep moving forward.”

With renewed confidence and a clear career direction, Neil successfully secured a job as a Passenger Host with GTR. “I finally have a steady income and a positive outlook for the future,” he said proudly. “The support I received helped me gain the confidence I needed to succeed. I now feel far more equipped to continue progressing in my career and am already thinking about how I can move into more senior roles.”

Reflecting on his journey, Neil is full of gratitude: “I cannot thank my adviser and the Get Set UK team enough for everything they’ve done for me. Their encouragement and professionalism have made a lasting impact. I’ll continue to promote the outstanding support of Get Set UK and the National Careers Service to anyone struggling to get back into work. The journey can be daunting, but with the right guidance, it’s possible, and even exciting.”
