A success story

Oliver’s success story.

Get Set for overcoming employment hurdles with the Work Wise programme.

The power of personalised support.

Oliver, a qualified bookkeeper living with dyspraxia, came to the Work Wise programme, delivered by Get Set UK, determined to find a new role, but frustrated by repeated setbacks. Despite securing multiple interviews, he struggled to progress beyond the first stage, receiving little to no feedback from employers.

Despite funding his own professional qualifications and showing a clear commitment to his career, Oliver’s dyspraxia, a condition that affects coordination and communication style, may have been misunderstood by some interviewers unfamiliar with neurodiversity.

This created a barrier that had nothing to do with ability and everything to do with perception. Oliver didn’t need to change who he was. He needed support to better showcase the skills and experience he already had.

Tailored support that made a difference.

Get Set UK IPS Employment Specialist, John Moriarty, worked closely with Oliver to provide targeted, practical guidance that reflected his unique strengths and circumstances. Our support focused on:

Interview coaching – including realistic roleplay and structured feedback to help Oliver present his skills in a more natural, engaging way.

Confidence building – through encouragement, reassurance, and a focus on what he could control in the process.

Employer research strategies – ensuring he could tailor his approach to reflect each organisation’s values, culture, and expectations.

Refining communication style – helping Oliver strike the balance between professionalism and authenticity, allowing his personality and capability to shine.

Through regular one-to-one sessions, Oliver developed a clearer understanding of what was holding him back and how to overcome it. As he grew more confident, the shift in how he presented himself became unmistakable, from formal and reserved to self-assured and authentic.

A new chapter at Merlin Estates.

Oliver’s transformation was clear in his very next interview. He impressed the team at Merlin Estates and secured a full-time role as Service Charge Accounts Finance Assistant.

This opportunity not only marked the next step in Oliver’s career but also renewed his self-belief and proved that with the right support, talented individuals can overcome hidden barriers and thrive.
